Portugese bricklayers now on £50,000 a year

There is such a shortage of skilled bricklayers in the UK right now that Portugese brickies are being paid up to £1,000 a week.

According to a survey by Manpower Employment, the shortage of skilled workers in the UK means that one in three large construction companies are having to turn down many of the jobs they are being asked to bid on. Apparently it’s not just bricklayers (who by the way, normally earn around £500 a week). Apparently, there is also a shortage of plumbers, electricians, HGV drivers and engineers right now. that;s because everyone thinks they can get rich sitting in front of a computer screen (see this weeks Newsletter for my take on this and how you can make more money).

What has this got to do with you?

Well, I am always saying that you don’t need to invent an anti-gravity device to make money. You also don’t need to be a bricklayer yourself either – running an agency supplying these trades is the classic “middleman” scenario satisfying a very hungry audience. I sat around a table with eleven other people last week and one of them, an electrician, was telling me he was having trouble finding work. Amazing! I have no doubt that people who are great electricians are not always the best at marketing their skills and finding work. You can see where I’m going with this.

In the search for your next business opportunity, don’t overlook the opportunities that exist in supplying basic skills that we all need every day in order to keep our hectic lives on track. Find a hungry audience – satisfy that market better than the competition – bank the profits.
